Check Out The Importance Of Topographic Map

September 4th, 2010 SLV

Many people find things of the past quite irrelevant at present. Topographical maps are one of these things  several people may not give importance these days. You too might be one of these folks. Why would you be  interested in such an old thing when you can conveniently utilize more advanced gears and gadgets anyway? I could even assume you would not be interested in free topographical maps if such will be provided to you. However, you  need to think this over again. There will come a time that the exact thing you are taking for granted right this moment would become the very thing you will need soon.

You have  learned from school that a map is an illustrated representation of the earth’s surface and parts of it.  Continents, countries, cities and villages are shown in a rectangular piece of paper to give you an aerial like  view of how bodies of land and water are arranged. Topographic maps on the other hand come a little more  detailed than regular maps. It is distinct because it depicts the earth’s surface through more specific contoured  lines. These lines are the ones that link points of identical elevation on the land’s surface, be it above or  below the reference surface. One of these points of reference is the mean sea level among others. These contours  also enable the possibility of measuring the depths of the bodies of water, steepness of slopes and heights of  mountains and valley.

At present, there are existing websites which gives out free topographical maps that many of us could use when the  situation demands for it. This thing can be used when trekking, hunting, mountain climbing and even in emergency  situations where GPS and other advanced devices are not accessible. You may not need it today but sooner or  later, you will regret that you have not given it as much attention as you should have.

Other people might as well ignore the importance of the map since they do not even know how to use this certain  kind of map. Actually reading a topographical map is as easy as one-two-three if you only pay a little more  attention to it. All you need to do is to grab one and get acquainted with the lines, images, and colors depicted  on the map. Remember, each icon included in it stands for a particular thing. So the capability of determining  what these icons stand for would help you big time by the moment you will need its help.

You must not wait for tomorrow before learning what you need to learn. Things of the past may be a little boring but such things may be the only way to  go in certain times.

4 Steps To Developing A Sustainability Plan For Your Business

September 3rd, 2010 SLV

Consumer awareness of sustainable business practices has grown exponentially in the past few years.  That makes the decision to make your business operation more sustainable considerably easier.  Chipotle restaurant supplies the perfect example.  They’ve been successful with a slightly more expensive product in a down economy precisely because customers appreciate their sustainable practices.

If you’ve set a sustainability goal for yourself, then the next thing you need is a plan.  How are you going to make your operation more sustainable?  What are the areas that can provide the maximum benefit with the least amount of investment?  How do you plan to market your efforts to your customers?

All are good questions, and you’d better have answers before you start spending time and money.

Here’s four steps to get you started towards a greener, more profitable future:

Improve energy efficiency.  In most businesses this is the easiest place to cut costs with minimal investment.  The added bonus is that you get to tell your customers how committed to sustainability you are after you’ve cut energy bills.  Simple improvements like training your staff to manage equipment efficiently, cutting heating and cooling bills, and investing in energy efficient water heating can make a huge difference.

Of course, every business is different, and the strategies that work for you aren’t going to work somewhere else.  When you’re creating your sustainability plan, identify where you can improve efficiency then estimate how much you’ll save on future bills versus how much it will cost you to implement your plan.

Come up with a program.  Another key to a successful sustainability plan for your business is figuring out ways to reduce waste.  Recycling and composting programs are the two most common ways to address this.  Unfortunately, unlike energy efficiency improvements these waste reduction programs are either cost neutral or increase your operating expenses.

That doesn’t mean they don’t provide benefits.  The public relations mileage you can get out of a good recycling or composting program can prove invaluable.  Remind customers you recycle or compost waste.  The local newspaper in your neighborhood is also another great way to get the word out about your program.  Newspapers run stories like this all the time, and it can be great free advertising.

Change your buying habits.  You’re a consumer just like everybody else.  The purchasing decisions you make for your restaurant say a lot about how you run your business.  Making sustainable decisions will also make your operation a lot greener.

Some places to start:

  • Source products locally and/or create your own
  • Use compostable disposable items like corn cups
  • Buy only certified sustainable raw materials like timber

Don’t be bashful – talk about yourself!  Implementing a successful sustainability plan doesn’t do you a bit of good if no one knows about the hard work and money you’ve invested.  As you put this plan into action, don’t be afraid to tell everyone you can think of about what you’re doing.

This isn’t just a one-time announcement.  Your sustainability plan will likely take some time to implement, and you should turn that effort into an ongoing conversation with anyone who will listen, especially customers.  Use multiple channels ranging from banners to social media to announce your new, sustainable self to the world.  You’ll be amazed how interested people will be in what you’re doing.
